- : Whooops - According to tests (not to mention benchmarks done here locally)
- : the Mac emulator running on the A4000 (from before the days of Escom) would
- : run Mac software at speeds exceeding 4 times that of a very high powered
- : Mac (this test was done between a Mac 840AV with the DSP chip and DSP filters
- : against an A4000/25 with a broken write-back cache)
-
- A broken WB-cache? I'll have to write that down.
- If this is true I'd like to know how they got the A4000 to boot at all.
- About this test, it has to be a very special test because our
- Q840AVs generally perform about 4-5 times better that of the stock
- A4000/040 - manipulating PhotoShop, using the DSP.
- Quite the opposite of your claim in other words.
-
- : Now - the PowerMac is not a serious increase in power over this tested
- : Mac...
-
- Really? A typical, general purpose, 100MHz PMac is not a
- serious increase in power over a 40Mhz 040 and a 66MHz DSP?
- Mind you, how many applications were written for this DSP?
-
- : Though the 060 IS a serious improvement over the 040.
-
- Technically yes, practically no. It will take some time for
- programers to get to grips with 060-optimized code taking
- advantage of the 060s super-scalar architecture. Especially so
- since we are talking about the Amiga here, a platform which
- comparably even has limited 040 experience.
- Until this is a reality, and we have at least 256KB of L2-cache,
- we will not see the dramatic increase in speed that the 060
- HW-ref. manual seems to suggest - at least by first eyesight.
-
- : The PPC
- : is by all means nothing special - it's popularity only developed by the
- : hype of the combined manufacturers - not the quality of the device itself.
-
- Would you like to clearify this while your arguments are
- still fresh in memory?
-
- : Now consider what the equivalent Amigas could do compared to a Mac...
- : Ever put an A3000 against a IIci? Or the A500 against the original
- : Mac? Not to mention the A1000??? If you can sit there and tell me
- : that the equivalent macs could do the same or better - you'd better
- : check out what you're smoking a little more carefully. It's causing
- : you serious brain damage.
-
- I seriously question the relevance of such a comparison.
-
- : We won't even get into why the Amiga is a significant advance over the
- : current PC.
-
- Good, it's been the headline story of at least a zillion
- treads already.
-
- : The PC hasn't really changed since it's introduction in the
- : early 80's.
-
- That's....that's interesting.
- Elaborate please.. :)
-
- : The Amiga has changed a great deal under the same idea that
- : it was born under because that idea was conceived with great forethought
- : and vision.
-
- In other words you are saying that the Amiga has not changed
- much at all because it was so brilliant right from the start....?
- Cheers...
